This video encourages viewers to plan for and participate in National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month for September 2005, as it describes various ways in which communities throughout the Nation observed this month in 2004.
Abstract
The purpose of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month is to bring to communities and to the Nation the message that recovery from alcohol and/or drug addiction is possible through treatment programs and the support of family, friends, and community institutions. The core of this video is the use of images, verbal narrative, speech excerpts, and personal testimonies from recovering addicts in order to motivate and guide communities, organizations, and individuals in planning and observing Recovery Month. Among the 2004 events described are a national luncheon entitled America Honors Recovery, which included the reading of President Bush's proclamation about the 2004 Recovery Month; a nationwide cooperative effort in which major league baseball teams recognized Recovery Month at ball games with various activities, including testimonies of recovery from fans and players; art shows and sales by recovering addicts to which the public was invited; Recovery Month festivals that provided information, entertainment, food, and activities that dramatized the effectiveness of treatment and the hope it holds for alcohol and drug addicts; and church-sponsored "Recovery Revivals" that emphasized the importance of faith in the treatment and recovery experience. The video concludes with information about materials and resources for planning and observing 2005 Recovery Month.
