Forty percent of all correctional facility residents were committed for crimes against persons, which included homicide, sexual assault, aggravated/simple assault, assault, robbery, kidnapping, other sex offenses, and other person offenses. Of all residents, 35 percent had been committed for narcotics-law violations, including possession, sale, and distribution; 82 percent of the drug offenses involved sale/distribution. The medium length of confinement was 5 years. Thirty-one percent were committed with maximum sentences of 10 years or more; 4 percent were serving life sentences, and 14 offenders had been given capital sentences. Corrections residents with sentences having parole ineligibility terms constituted 63 percent of the confined population. Forty-three percent of all corrections residents were 30 years old or younger, with the median age of inmates being 32. Sixty-four percent of the inmates were Black, 19 percent were White, and 17 percent were Hispanic. Of the 21 New Jersey counties, 10--Atlantic, Bergen, Camden, Essex, Hudson, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Passaic, and Union--accounted for 84 percent of the inmates; Essex County had the highest percentage at 18 percent.
