This article reviews three software intelligence tools that allow law enforcement to share information.
Abstract
The intelligence tools since the terrorist attacks on September 2001 focus not only on collecting and organizing information, but also on sharing that information with others in law enforcement and emergency response. Three software products are reviewed that assist law enforcement in sharing data: Xanalys Corporations’ Investigators’ Desktop, Veritys’ K2 Enterprise, and Visual Analytics’ Digital Information Gateway (DIG). The Investigators’ Desktop is described as a data analysis workhorse and can sort vast amounts of structured and unstructured data, compare it, correlate it, and draw inferences. Soon member agencies will be able to access information from a central intelligence database. The K2 Enterprise has been used by the Department of Homeland Security’s Joint Regional Information Exchange System for over a year, which includes thousands of users in agencies in all 50 States. K2 Enterprise can monitor, categorize, locate, and analyze data that has been placed on user-defined profiles and can be thought of as mimicking Internet search engines. DIG technology allows users to search data from a large array of internal databases, facilitating information sharing among agencies. DIG technology is very security conscience and makes use of role-based authentication. The article also includes a textbox describing how the Branford (Connecticut) Police Department made use of the Australia-based ISYS: desktop search software to collect proofs as part of its accreditation process.
