This article provides an overview of the FBI Academy's Leadership Fellows program in Quantico, VA, which prepares command staff members for the challenges they will face as they assume additional responsibilities.
Abstract
Begun in 2000 under the supervision of the Leadership Development Institute, this 1-year program aims to enhance the leadership skills of individuals in command-level positions. Fellows spend 6 months at the academy and the last 6 months at their respective agencies or at Quantico for additional research and study. In addition to providing interaction with a broad spectrum of law enforcement leaders from around the world, the academy's proximity to Washington, DC, provides access to a broad selection of resources and educational opportunities. After completing academy work, a fellow works on projects for the FBI, conducts a research project for the sponsoring agency that brings immediate value from the training, and follows a personal development program or a list of goals with anticipated outcomes. This article describes the details of the application process. Expectations of fellows are then listed as follows: teach and attend classes; conduct research; manage projects; facilitate meetings; coordinate programs; attend professional conferences; write publishable articles or documents; and establish professional networks. 3 notes
