This report, presented by British researchers, describes the procedures for a systematic review designed to identify interventions that have proven to help crime victims recover from the adverse psychological impacts of a criminal victimization, including, but not limited to, victims of burglary, robbery, sexual or nonsexual assault, and rape.
Abstract
The studies included in the review must use an intervention versus comparison group research design, with measurements made either at posttreatment only; both at pretreatment and posttreatment; or at pretreatment, posttreatment, and further follow-up points. The comparison group may include victims who received no intervention; victims who were on a waiting list and would receive an intervention later; or victims who received a placebo intervention known not to have the desired effect. The effectiveness of the interventions reviewed will be judged mainly by comparing the outcome measures of the intervention group with the outcome measures of the control group at posttreatment and follow-up. The information collected during the data extraction and quality assessment phases of the review will initially be summarized in tabular form. Tables will summarize information on the characteristics of the interventions, the study sample, the results, and the methodological quality of the study. The time frame for the review will extend from January 2002 to the preparation of the final report in July 2005. The review will be updated yearly. Currently, there are no plans to include qualitative research. 36 references and appended supplementary material
