Abstract
While fingerprint analysis is the most straightforward way to identify human remains, the human decomposition process can complicate matters by compromising the decedent’s ridge detail. Two main techniques are used to obtain fingerprints from decomposed human remains: live-scan technology and manual casting techniques. Live-scan technology has the capability to capture ridge detail and also aids the examiner by guiding the examiner through the fingerprinting process. Problems with this technology are that few morgues actually use live-scan technology on a daily basis and there are difficulties with capturing the ridge detail on the capture platen of the live-scan system. Manual casting techniques are more widely used and the required materials are readily available in most law enforcement agencies. A case example of the use of manual casting is presented that illustrates the challenges and advantages of this method. Future research should improve manual casting methods through the enhancement of casting mediums. Figures
