This report presents information on the intersessional work of the United Nations (U.N.) Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, the management of the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime, and the financial status of the U.N. Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Fund.
Abstract
Three intersessional meetings of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, along with four meetings of its extended bureau, were held between the conclusion of the 13th session of the Commission and the end of March 2000. These meetings provided follow-up to the Commission's 13th session, which included discussion of the status of preparations, organizational matters, and a draft declaration for the 11th U.N. Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. The intersessional meeting held on January 26, 2005, decided that the provisional deadline for submission of draft resolutions would be noon on the first day of the 14th session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. A description of activities related to the management of the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime outlines the reform process of the Office. An action plan was developed to improve governance, funding, operation, staff-management relations, and communication. As guidelines for the medium term, operational priorities and program/operational instruments pertain to drugs, crime, and terrorism as part of an integrated approach to overcoming the forces of "uncivil" society. Other reform issues addressed for the Office are its structure, its consolidated budget, and the integrity initiative. Other issues discussed in the management of the Office are repositioning its work and continuation of the reform process. Information on the U.N. Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Fund covers the origin and evolution of the fund, its management, contributions and pledges, and financial statements. 2 tables and 1 figure
