This report presents the Australian component of the 2004 International Crime Victimization Survey (ICVS) providing estimates of criminal victimization for selected crimes and public perceptions of crime in Australia.
Abstract
Managed by the Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC), this report covers the technical details, data collection, and methodology of the Australian component of the 2004 International Crime Victimization Survey (ICVS) which has involved over 60 countries worldwide since its inception. The ICVS is designed to provide estimates of criminal victimization for selected crimes and public perception of crime, and to make international comparisons using a common questionnaire across participating countries. In addition, it provides detailed information on the nature of these crimes and their outcomes, including reporting to the police. The 2004 ICVS’ sample was enhanced to enable more detailed analysis to address issues of importance to the Australian Government. The report is divided into five main sections: questionnaire, sample design and selection, analysis of the sample, survey weights, and a comparison with the 2000 ICVS. References and appendix
