Funded and created by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the National Youth Court Center (NYCC), established in 1999 and operated by the American Probation and Parole Association, prepared a comprehensive compilation of youth court programs across the United States. Youth courts are also known as teen, peer, and student courts and are programs in which youth sentence their peers for minor delinquent and status offenses and other problem behaviors. Over the past decade, youth courts have increased exponentially. According to NYCC, in 1994 there were only 78 youth court programs in operation and as of early 2005, there were more than 1,000 youth court programs in 48 States and the District of Columbia, an increase of more than 1,200 percent. In addition to the listing of youth courts, additional information was compiled and presented on national resources, such as publications, Web sites, training and technical assistance, and videotapes.
