This report presents the activities and accomplishments of the United Youth Courts of Alaska (UYCA) for the year 2002-2003.
Abstract
The United Youth Courts of Alaska (UYCA) works with communities to train youth and adult volunteers in providing proactive youth-led adjudication for youth offenders. The volunteers understand that youth offenders presented with a chance to take responsibility for their actions get more than a sanction to fulfill; they get an opportunity to build their community and learn important social competencies. UYCA focuses on meeting the critical needs for youth adjudication and community building. This annual report presents a historical overview and the activities and accomplishments of the 14 UYCA for the year 2002 to 2003. Highlights of the UYCA for 2002-2003 include: (1) reduced recidivism rate to about 7 percent; (2) developed relationships with nine communities interested in starting their own youth court; and (3) awarded scholarships to youth court volunteers attending the National Youth Court Center which gathered in Washington, DC. Descriptions and accomplishments for Alaska’s 14 member youth courts, as well as 2 associate members are presented.
