This report presents summary descriptions of 22 correctional, court, detention, juvenile, law enforcement, and multiple-use facilities selected for commendation in 2003-2004 by a jury of architects and criminal justice professionals.
Abstract
For each facility, the report presents a brief architect's description of the building and its outstanding characteristics, along with drawings and/or photos of the exterior and interior of the building. Other information provided for each facility includes the owner, type of facility, type of construction, site area, building area, capacity, total cost of construction, project status, and the names of the companies involved in the design and construction of the facility. The correctional facility selected is located in San Luis Obispo, CA, and involved an addition and renovation of a county correctional and detention facility completed in September 2003. The four court facilities selected are the Lloyd D. George U.S. Courthouse in Las Vegas, NV; the Hudson County Correctional Center in Kearney, NJ; the Kent County Courthouse in Grand Rapids, MI; and the Lyon County Courthouse in Emporia, KS. The two detention facilities selected are the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Clarksburg, MD, and the Porter County Jail in Valparaiso, IN. Nine juvenile facilities include detention facilities, juvenile justice centers, and juvenile halls in Alaska, California, Virginia, Georgia, Colorado, Delaware, and Arizona. The four law enforcement facilities are the Delaware State Police Center, the Houston Emergency Center, the Modesto Police Headquarters (California), and the Valley Emergency Communications Center (Utah). The three multiple-use facilities are the Greensboro Public Safety Building (North Carolina), Reno Municipal Court (Nevada), and the Sauk County Law Enforcement Center (Wisconsin). The names and background descriptions of the jury members are provided.
