This video presents a panel discussion outlining the dangers of drug addiction within families and providing resources for help.
Abstract
The panel discussion is part of the Road to Recovery series on drug addiction offered through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment. Ivette Torres moderates as four panel members discuss their experiences with overcoming addiction in the family. Panel members are: (1) Charles Curie, Administrator, SAMHSA; (2) Robert Ackerman, Director, Mid-Atlantic Addiction Training Institute; (3) Patricia Denney, Coordinator, Family Wellness Program; and (4) Pat Mosby, Care Coordinator, Community Kids Program. Issues discussed include observations of how the addiction of one family member impacts the entire family, as well as the community. Panel members explore the main dangers to the family when one member is an addict; dangers include economic problems, family violence, communication problems, and emotional neglect. They also discuss how addiction impacts the workplace and the community. Information is presented about how to confront a family member with an addiction problem and resources for families are offered. Peppered throughout the video are personal accounts of addiction and recovery.
