Abstract
The top story, “OJJDP’s ICAC Task Force Program Protects Children in Cyberspace,” discusses the development of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention’s (OJJDP’s) Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force to help prevent the online victimization of children and adolescents. Special features in this newsletter edition include articles on children’s advocacy centers, grassroots efforts to help at-risk youth, and a conference about local remedies for disproportionate minority contact with the justice system. An announcement alerts readers that a videoconference on youth gangs presented by OJJDP has been postponed. Other news includes new publications, listings of videoconference tapes and DVDs, funding updates, and news from OJJDP staff, the Coordinating Council, and the Advisory Committee. A report on the prevalence of the online victimization of America’s youth is highlighted, which concluded that approximately 19 percent of young Internet users had received an unwanted sexual solicitation online during the past year while 25 percent had been exposed to unwanted sexual material online. The final article highlighted in this newsletter edition concerns patterns of child pornography which were analyzed using data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Incident-Based Reporting System.
