This guide presents a standardized training program to assist law enforcement agencies and Field Training Officers (FTOs) with the orientation and field training of newly assigned patrol officers.
Abstract
The training program has four main goals: (1) to provide standardized training to new patrol officers that assists them in translating police academy training into practical street applications; (2) to produce competent peace officers capable of professionally performing solo patrol assignments; (3) to provide standards for the evaluation of officers; and (4) to enhance police professionalism, including job skills and ethical standards. Part one presents a description of the field training program followed by a discussion of the main program elements, which include special assignments and phase training. The roles and expectation of trainees and field training officers are delineated. Part two describes the evaluation and remediation process. Standardized evaluation guidelines are presented and common performance evaluation errors are described, followed by a presentation of remedial training strategies for officers needing more training attention. Part three presents a field training program guide that includes the recommendations to incorporate goals and objectives, a chain of command and supervision, and an explanation of the evaluation process. The guide includes approximately 100 pages worth of worksheets to be used during the field training program. Appendixes include useful worksheets such as the Daily Observation Report and the Remedial Training Assignment Worksheet. Tables
