Abstract
During 2000, 171 juveniles were committed to West Virginia juvenile correctional facilities, representing 0.09 percent of all juvenile offenders in the State during 2000. A full 88.9 percent of committed juveniles in 2000 were male, although the number of female commitments during 2000 increased 1.4 percent from 1999. Minorities were overrepresented within West Virginia’s juvenile correctional population: 16.4 percent of committed juveniles were from minority populations while only 5.8 percent of the State’s juvenile population was non-White in 2000. The property offenses of burglary and theft were the most frequently charged crime among committed juveniles, followed by the person offense of assault/battery. Almost half of all juvenile commitments were the result of a probation violation. West Virginia released 168 juveniles from juvenile correctional facilities during 2000 after they had served an average of nearly 10 months in detention. Information is also offered on the capacity of West Virginia’s juvenile correctional facilities and their daily populations. Graphs, tables, works cited
