Cases of laterally inverted, or mirrored, fingerprints have been previously discussed in the research literature, with authors offering their experiences in order to aid other forensic investigators. Two cases of laterally inverted latent prints are discussed here. The first case involved the identification of a latent fingerprint impression on a piece of plastic wrap. Upon examination it was discovered that the print was actually two overlapping, opposing loop patterns that might have been made when the plastic was folded on itself. The second case involved the development and comparison of a laterally inverted latent print that had reacted to the ninhydrin and had adhered to the adhesive side of transparent tape on a paper mailing label. The author stresses the importance of proper analysis of the minutia of fingerprints discovered in laterally changed positions. Figures, references
