This article describes CASE Partnership (Communities Against Senior Exploitation), a Bureau of Justice Assistance national replication project to combat elder fraud through faith-based alliances.
Abstract
Too many elderly citizens become the victims of fraud and exploitation. In an attempt to expand its elder fraud prevention programming, the Denver District Attorney’s office began an initiative to partner with faith-based organizations to bring education, intervention, and advocacy to elderly citizens. The CASE Partnership was born and proved highly effective and successful at reaching its target audience and reducing fraud victimization among elderly citizens. Their success led the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), Office of Justice Programs to select the CASE Partnership as a model for program replication, training, and technical assistance. BJA encourages all prosecutors to become a CASE affiliate, offering a Web site containing a CASE Replication Toolkit and other resources. Details of the effectiveness of the Denver CASE Partnership are offered and the outcomes of Denver area replications that were funded in 2004 and 2005 are presented. Overall, CASE allows prosecutors and law enforcement to be proactive in the fight against fraud and build positive relations with both senior citizens and with faith-based organizations.
