This article explores the usefulness of distance learning as an option to meeting police training standards and requirements.
Abstract
Every police agency has training mandates it must meet each year, yet limited budgets and staffing often make it difficult for agencies to meet these requirements. Distance learning may be the solution; this article presents information about distance learning and explores the questions relevant to the use of distance learning for police training purposes. The first step police agencies should take when considering the use of distance learning is to select a distance learning option that fits the training needs of the department. When reviewing distance learning technology options it is also important to consider the availability of trainers as well as who will be receiving the training. Following a description of distance learning, which is described as a method of training that can be completed remotely, the advantages and disadvantages of online training are explored. Among the advantages of online training are the consistency of course content and the cost-savings; disadvantages include limited opportunity for networking and downloading time. Examples of different types of interactivity that can enhance online training are offered followed by a discussion of how to select a program provider that will respond to the unique needs of the department. A brief case example of how one police agency is using distance learning is provided.
