During the period 2003 through 2005, CII assisted over 20,000 children and their families in Los Angeles County who had experienced violence and other forms of abuse and neglect. Among the services offered by CII are violence treatment and prevention programming, early education, and community service programs. In fact, CII developed one of the country’s strongest models for treating traumatized children and their families. The comprehensive range of trauma-related services include child and family mental health assessment, in-home counseling, specialized treatment for sexual abuse, and emergency response and follow-up services for victims of community, school, and domestic violence. Three school-based violence prevention programs offered in the neighborhoods surrounding CII’s central Los Angeles headquarters are highlighted: one is an anti-bullying program, another is a gang-prevention program, and the third offers school-based mental health services. Project Stable Home, which targets vulnerable children and infants at high risk of abuse and abandonment, is described, as is the Parent-to-Parent Program which offers parents instruction on useful life skills such as financial planning. Other programs and services offered through CII during the 2-year period are described and include a variety of support groups, a pilot program designed to break the cycle of abuse in violent families, and volunteerism programs.
