This article recalls the story of Deputy Jennifer Fulford, a member of the Orange County, FL, Sheriff’s Department who won a pitched gun battle in a garage with two armed suspects in May 2004.
Abstract
Called to the scene of a home invasion, Fulford met one of the house occupants outside of the home. The woman informed Fulford that three unknown men were in her house and her three children were seated in a van in the garage. Concern for the safety of the children led Fulford to enter the garage. Once in the garage, Fulford and another officer came under fire from two of the suspects, who were also in the garage. While the other officer was able to escape to safety, Fulford remained trapped in the garage with the two suspects firing at her from both the front and back. Fulford recalls how her training helped her remain calm and know what to do during this perilous situation. In the end, although she sustained seven bullet wounds, Fulford triumphed over her attackers. She has since been recognized as Officer of the Year by the International Association of Chiefs of Police and Parade Magazine and has collected a range of awards including the Orange Country Sheriff’s Office Purple Heart and Combat Ribbon.
