Abstract
The total number of offenders sentenced in 2004, 1,547,300, was the largest number recorded in the last 10 years; it was a 4-percent increase from 2003. This was largely due to the increase in summary offenses, particularly summary motoring offenses, which increased 7 percent. The number of offenders sentenced for indictable offenses declined by 5 percent, to 317,000. This decrease was due primarily to the 7-percent drop in the number of persons sentenced for indictable offenses in magistrates' courts. The number of offenders sentenced to immediate custody increased 53 percent from 1994 to 2004, and custody rates for indictable offenses increased in both the Crown Court and magistrates' courts in 2004. The number of community-based sentences has steadily increased from 1994 to 2004 (56-percent increase). The proportion of all offenders fined decreased from 75 percent in 1994 to 70 percent in 2004. The number of previous convictions for standard list offenses for offenders sentenced for indictable offenses has remained fairly stable over the last 10 years. Crime statistics for fiscal year 2004-05 decreased by 7 percent from the previous fiscal year according to the British Crime Survey. Extensive tables and figures
