The study developed and evaluated two Spanish-language instruments assessing dating violence in Mexican adolescents.
Abstract
The preliminary evaluation results of the Spanish-language Conflict in Adolescent Dating Relationship Inventory (CADRI) and Attitudes Towards Dating Violence Scales indicated that both the internal consistency and test-retest reliability were acceptable. The findings suggest that the Spanish-language versions of these instruments are useful for assessing dating violence among Mexican adolescents. The authors caution that because these two assessment instruments were originally developed for use with Canadian adolescents, there is a possibility that important culturally-specific elements were poorly measured or overlooked. The research was undertaken due to the lack of culturally and linguistically appropriate assessment instruments for the assessment of dating violence among Mexican adolescents. Researchers modified, translated, and back-translated the CADRI and the Attitudes Towards Dating Violence Scales into Spanish for use with Mexican adolescent populations. Evaluation of the Spanish-language instruments was conducted with 307 Mexican high school students in 2 cities in northern Mexico who completed the 2 assessment instruments after gaining consent from their parents. Future research should focus on examining the antecedents, characteristics, and effects of interpersonal violence among Mexican adolescents in order to develop culturally sensitive and effective interventions.
