This article identifies five critical questions which must be addressed and answered in order to prepare and survive a terrorist attack.
Abstract
In order to train to be better prepared to survive the next terrorist attack, five critical questions must be answered. First, does your jurisdiction have an existing plan on how to respond to a terrorist or mass casualty event involving weapons of mass destruction? Most agencies are required by State laws to have some form of emergency action plan. Secondly, how have the emergency providers in the jurisdiction been trained to respond? These include: police, fire, and emergency medical. Thirdly, do you have the appropriate equipment to begin to contain and mitigate the incident? Fourth, do you have enough personal protective equipment to ensure life safety? Lastly, does everyone know what specific jobs or tasks they are responsible for? Without this knowledge there is increased likelihood of chaos and decreased survivability. To achieve survival, there must be a working together, a planning together and a responding together.
