This book provides a broad overview of the design, implementation, and management of treatment services for individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
Abstract
The book is designed to present a comprehensive source for substance abuse and mental health professionals; it offers a sample blueprint that can be used or modified to fit existing treatment systems or programs. The first section includes two chapters that explore the scope and nature of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders and review the historical development of treatment services for co-occurring disorders. The qualities of effective treatment programs for co-occurring disorders are also presented and include an integrated treatment model, flexibility of treatment requirements and lengths of stay, and the availability of a full continuum of care. The second section has three chapters that address the various factors involved in developing treatment services for individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders. Specific topics include identifying target populations, planning for co-occurring disorders treatment services, and the implementation of a new treatment service into an existing treatment setting or, conversely, as a stand-alone program. The third section includes five chapters that address many of the issues that arise in the day-to-day management of co-occurring disorders treatment programs. Individual chapters focus on the hiring and training of program staff, the clinical supervision of treatment services, effective program management, and ensuring program survival. Also addressed in this section are issues related to operating within a larger treatment system composed of other service and referral agencies. Appendixes include a model community needs assessment, a training needs assessment form, sample interview questions, and a sample applicant evaluation form. Appendixes, references, index
