This paper uses the analogy of "practitioner as guide" in describing the roles of YSAS practitioners and NEXUS consultants in their work with youth who have complex problems. In youth services, the development of trust between practitioners and their young clients, along with provision of accessible and reliable support, compose the foundation of therapeutic relationships. The role of "guide" involves being a resource for assistance while encouraging the client to be his/her own agent for change and setting goals. Effective guides are truthful and trustworthy in making and keeping promises, and they have a thorough knowledge of the evolutionary process toward autonomy characteristic of youth. Guides are well informed about the services and rights available for youth, and they are skilled in referring youth to those services that best fit their needs. YSAS practitioners, for example, do not impose some idealized state of physical or mental health on their young clients. Rather they help youth to assess their circumstances and capacities in connection with the goals they have or are setting for their own lives. They act as guides in helping youth navigate the problems and circumstances that can impede and divert youth in reaching their goals. NEXUS consultants offer clinical leadership through direct services and secondary consultation services. Modeling and support is combined with clinical advice and guidance. They work with other contributors committed to the well-being of their clients, including YSAS practitioners. 17 references
