Throughout the United Nation’s activities, many standards, norms, and recommendations have been developed and adopted and are being complied with for inmates’ treatment. With the elevated role of the United Nations, the Korean correctional administration has tried to realize the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as other international standards and norms. However, there are areas in need of improvement. In an effort to meet those recommendations, the Korean Government has taken various measures for the promotion of human rights and has reported the results. The Korean correctional administration is pursuing openness through broad community involvement. As a result, private prisons are being introduced with the enactment of relevant laws and regulations. To accomplish its goals, Korea should devote its efforts in actively participating in international conferences for crime prevention and criminal justice and by supporting the United Nations activities in terms of human resources and finances.
