This study examined the components of vehicular pursuit policies of State Police and State Highway Patrol agencies across the United States.
Abstract
Many States have developed very comprehensive policies containing references to safety and departmental liability concerns. However, based on examination of existing State agencies’ policies, it appears as though far too many agencies are in need of more comprehensive written pursuit policies. In addition, many written policies are in need of a more focused approach in detailing elements in the administrative realm of law enforcement. The myriad of issues surrounding police pursuits is filled with concerns regarding liability, negligence, force, reporting, and community relations. It is vital for a law enforcement agency to have in effect a viable, trainable vehicular pursuit policy to serve as a guide for officer discretion while in the field. This research paper analyzed the vehicular pursuit policy of State Police and State Highway Patrol agencies in the United States. It provides a glimpse into the components of vehicular pursuit policies with possible commonalities among agencies. Tables, references
