Abstract
The report is divided into four sections: (1) women in prisons; (2) women in jails; (3) women in community corrections; and (4) girls in juvenile justice. Each section contains a series of abstracts on articles about female offenders in the correctional system. All articles summarized were Web-accessible from 2001 through March 2006. The first section summarizes 46 articles found on the Internet between 2001 and March 2006. For example, the abstract for the article entitled, Staffing Analysis for Women’s Prisons and Special Prison Populations revealed that 90 percent of respondents used the same process for staffing women’s correctional housing as they used to staff male general population housing. Other summaries describe the prevalence of the sexual abuse of female inmates in Ohio and present a profile of women gang members in Canada. The second section presents 12 abstracts focused on articles about women in jail. Research summaries are presented for such topics as gender-responsive strategies for jails and how to effectively manage female inmates in local jail settings. The third section presents 19 abstracts on articles concerning women in community corrections. Topics include mother-child programs, evaluations of various programs designed for female offenders in the community, and the effectiveness of community residential services. The last section contains 18 abstracts summarizing articles about girls in the juvenile justice system. Services for female juvenile offenders in Texas are examined in one article while another article considers how to serve adolescent female offenders with mental health disorders. Citations are offered for each article in the report.
