This article describes how the CyberAngels Cyber Crime Unit (CCU) assists victims of Internet harassment and crimes.
Abstract
CyberAngels was formed in 1995 to help victims with problems related to Internet use, such as cyber stalking. Victims of Internet crimes often do not know where to look for help. The CyberAngels CCU offers victims the benefit of their expertise in the area of online victimization free of charge. CyberAngels is not a law enforcement agency, but rather a group of volunteers from all walks of life--police officers, judges, attorneys, homemakers--who help all kinds of people protect themselves from online victimization and, where crimes have occurred, they refer victims to the appropriate authorities. In many cases, CyberAngels’ newly created Police Liaison Unit can partner or liaison with law enforcement agencies on behalf of victims. CyberAngels offers HomeFront and Software teams that help prevent Internet related crimes. For example, HomeFront teams provide tips to parents on how to keep their children safe online. For their efforts in assisting victims of online victimization, President Bill Clinton recognized the CyberAngels at the White House with a President’s Service Award in 1998.
