This discusses the benefits to law enforcement agencies in adding rifles or pistol-caliber carbines to their police operations and the importance in training officers in the successful operation of these rifles.
Abstract
The pistol-caliber carbine is a great multiplier of police officer marksmanship. It offers solid hits at great range with a greater potential for rescue shots. The carbine is more versatile than the pistol or the shotgun. All law enforcement agencies should provide these guns to their officers, and more importantly agencies should teach their officers how to gain a tactical advantage when using a carbine through comprehensive training. This article discusses how the basics of marksmanship must be mastered before the carbine can be used well and successfully. Proper training must include, not only basic marksmanship, but training scenarios that include how to shoot at close range, how to counter multiple threats behind cover, how to target and hit partially exposed threats, how to stop threats in vehicles, and how to eliminate threats at long range. The article addresses the areas of basic shooting positions, quickness and accuracy, sighting methods, and carbine tactics. It provides a listing of available selected carbines and patrol rifles.
