Title: Crime in Maryland 2005 Uniform Crime Report

Annotation: This report presents the following crime-related statistics for Maryland's 2005 Uniform Crime Report: overall crime and offense types, clearance rates, arrests, law enforcement officers killed or assaulted, and law enforcement employee data.
Abstract: There were 237,843 total crime incidents recorded by Maryland law enforcement agencies in 2005, a 1-percent decrease compared to 2004. Violent crime (murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) increased 1 percent. Property crime (breaking or entering, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) decreased 2 percent. There were 308,075 total arrests in 2005, a 1-percent decrease compared to 2004. A total of 257,761 adults were arrested (less than 1-percent increase from 2004), and 50,314 juveniles were arrested (4-percent decrease). A total of 53,047 persons were arrested for drug abuse violations (2-percent increase); and 23,538 persons were arrested for driving while intoxicated (less than 1-percent decrease). One law enforcement officer died in the line of duty in 2005, and 4,166 officers were assaulted (8-percent increase). The 14,932 full-time law enforcement officers employed in 2005 reflected less than a 1-percent increase from 2004. There were 2.7 full-time law enforcement officers per 1,000 population.
