This report presents the following crime-related statistics for Maryland's 2005 Uniform Crime Report: overall crime and offense types, clearance rates, arrests, law enforcement officers killed or assaulted, and law enforcement employee data.
Abstract
There were 237,843 total crime incidents recorded by Maryland law enforcement agencies in 2005, a 1-percent decrease compared to 2004. Violent crime (murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) increased 1 percent. Property crime (breaking or entering, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) decreased 2 percent. There were 308,075 total arrests in 2005, a 1-percent decrease compared to 2004. A total of 257,761 adults were arrested (less than 1-percent increase from 2004), and 50,314 juveniles were arrested (4-percent decrease). A total of 53,047 persons were arrested for drug abuse violations (2-percent increase); and 23,538 persons were arrested for driving while intoxicated (less than 1-percent decrease). One law enforcement officer died in the line of duty in 2005, and 4,166 officers were assaulted (8-percent increase). The 14,932 full-time law enforcement officers employed in 2005 reflected less than a 1-percent increase from 2004. There were 2.7 full-time law enforcement officers per 1,000 population.
