Holidays are an especially dangerous time for car travel. In Missouri, one person was killed in a traffic crash every 7.4 hours between 2001 and 2005. Yet over the holidays, one person was killed every 6.5 hours during the same study period in Missouri, resulting in a total of 361 persons killed over the holidays between 2001 and 2005. The Memorial Day holiday from 2001 through 2005 resulted in 56 traffic crash deaths and another 2,982 traffic crash injuries while the Fourth of July holiday over the same time period resulted in 66 traffic crash deaths and 3,089 injuries. Just in 2005, the Fourth of July holiday resulted in 1,217 traffic crashes with 7 fatalities and 622 injuries. The Labor Day holiday resulted in 64 traffic crash fatalities and 2,913 injuries between 2001 and 2005; 19 of these fatalities occurred in 2005. Between 2001 and 2005, 83 people were killed and 3,210 were injured in traffic crashes over the Thanksgiving holiday while another 37 people were killed and 2,047 were injured over the Christmas holiday in Missouri. The New Year holiday resulted in 55 traffic crash fatalities between 2001 and 2005 and another 2,363 injuries. Data on 2005 holiday traffic crashes are also presented for Missouri counties and cities with populations of 1,000 or more. Data were drawn from the Missouri Statewide Traffic Accident Records System (STARS), which contains reports on all traffic crashes in Missouri that result in over $500 damage.
