This article describes a process to survey and enhance employee job engagement and motivation.
Abstract
The authors point out that there are many opportunities for enhancing engagement in employees; it is important to begin the process by asking employees what they want and what is important for them to be effective in their job roles. Gallup research has indicated that employee engagement is crucial to organizational success. Employee engagement, they found, is not tied to salary level but rather to the relationship they have with their immediate supervisors. A full 71 percent of the American work force is unmotivated, according to Gallup. Tips are offered to increase employee engagement and to create positive working relationships between managers and employees. It is suggested that correctional managers use the Gallup Organization’s 12 question survey to measure the degree of engagement among their employees. The article describes how to go about conducting the survey and advises a 1-day retreat for correctional leaders following the survey so that a plan can be created on how to best improve employee engagement.
