This paper briefly describes the National Sheriffs’ Association’s Neighborhood Watch program and how citizens can become involved in starting or participating in a Neighborhood Watch program.
Abstract
The National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) implemented the Neighborhood Watch program in 1972. The objective of the program is that of neighbors looking out for each other, working on neighborhood problems, and making their neighborhoods safer. Members of the Neighborhood Watch program learn how to work with law enforcement and report suspicious activity to the local police or sheriff’s office. In describing the Neighborhood Watch program, this paper describes how programs get started, the types of activities citizens can get involved in through their Neighborhood Watch group, and how beyond crime prevention, Neighborhood Watch groups can help the neighborhood strengthen hometown or community and homeland security activities. The paper tells citizens why they need to get involved and that they can find the time in their busy, daily schedules to get involved. It is everyday citizens that make Neighborhood Watch programs successful. Resources
