This Austrian study examined the use of psychotropic substances among adolescents, as well as related psychosocial factors.
Abstract
Major risk factors identified for substance use include: peer pressure, negative family atmosphere, school difficulties, and psychopathology. Knowledge about substance use acted as a protective factor. These factors should be targeted when addressing the issue of prevention. In this cohort study, a representative sample of 485 adolescents aged between 14 and 28 were surveyed. The survey was initiated by the Innsbruck city council and the government of the county of Tyrol, Austria in an attempt to receive an overview of the use of psychotropic substances in the adolescent community. Survey questions covered the domains of socio-demographic data, school-related issues, peer group and friends, leisure activities, family atmosphere, substance use, and knowledge about substance use support systems.
