This article describes the Mobile Tactical Trainer (MTT) by Anteon, an instrumented urban training simulator.
Abstract
The ever present threat of terrorism means that police officers need advanced tactical training to be prepared to handle serious situations. Anteon, a systems integration company that provides simulation and training technologies to the U.S. Army, developed the Mobile Tactical Trainer (MTT) to provide realistic and advanced urban training to police officers. Police officers from around North Carolina were invited to conduct training exercises with the MTT, which has the capability of providing immediate video and audio feedback in After Action Review (AAR) sessions. The MTT was adapted from a military trainer variant that prepared military units for combat. The MTT provides a “shoot house” with integrated instrumentation to control interactive targets. The instrumentation allows trainers to create a realistic environment (sounds and smells of combat) and to record the officer movements for playback during AAR sessions. When a law enforcement agency purchases a MTT, Anteon designers work with the agency to customize the MTT to the desired requirements, such as including custom-sized doors, passageways, and windows. Anteon designers also help prepare the delivery site and can train law enforcement personnel to install and service the instrumentation itself. Advantages of using the MTT system include its cost-effectiveness in providing a range of small and large unit training exercises, its flexibility, and its instant feedback.
