After receiving a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Terrorism Prevention Program grant to fund mobile data terminals, Lewis County Sheriff’s Department began shopping for mobile data terminals (MDTs) for its 60-plus police vehicles. Their research led them to purchase the Intronix GoBook VR-1 ruggedized laptops, in part for the laptops' combination of toughness and functionality for in-car use. Other advantages to the GoBook include its affordability, its rugged yet light design, its lighted keyboard, and its overall performance. The GoBook comes with an Intel Centrino 1.86 GHz Pentium M Processor with 533 MHz FSB, 2MB L2 Cache. The GoBook can be equipped with up to four internal radios and can be fitted with a fingerprint scanner to prevent unauthorized people from accessing the hard drive. Each GoBook is custom tailored to the specifications of the customer. Lewis County Sheriff’s Department has been happy with the GoBook. The County’s GoBooks are connected to the Web wirelessly which allows officers in the field to search for data, send e-mails, and coordinate with other departments during major emergencies. Overall, the Sheriff’s Department estimates that the GoBooks have saved officers approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes per day.
