ViCAP is a nationwide data information center that collects and analyzes information about crimes of violence. Agencies submit violent cases to the ViCAP, which then compares the case to all other cases in the database. ViCAP employs 18 crime analysts and has over 900 law enforcement agency clients across the country. ViCAP recently developed a comprehensive Sexual Assault Report form along with a computer application to work in conjunction with the ViCAP Client Server and Client Server applications. A limited release of ViCAP Sexual Assault Version 3.0 is scheduled for November 2005. The article also describes the transition of the ViCAP from its current client server-based system to a user-friendly Web-based system. The new Web-based application will have a central database that will allow users to search any field across the entire ViCAP database. Other advantages of the Web-based system include instantaneous access to the database and easier maintenance requirements. The Web-based ViCAP application will take advantage of the LEO system capabilities, which provide a secure network for all State and local law enforcement agencies to share information via the Internet at no cost. ViCAP version 3.1, which contains the new sexual assault component, will deploy via the secure LEO Web site, which provides additional security measures such as verifying all users are law enforcement personnel. Minimum system requirements for operating the current version of ViCAP are provided and contact information is provided for law enforcement agencies who would like to join the ViCAP program. Endnotes
