The study identified 58 reentry programs with program descriptions developed for 50. Findings supported the use of a 2 by 2 typology of initiatives, with one factor being whether the criminal justice or mental health system initiated the program and the other being the degree of collaboration between the two systems. Results were derived from a national survey of service strategies used to assist people with mental illness to manage their transition from incarceration to the community. Data were collected between August 2002 and January 2003. This study assessed reentry programs throughout the United States for individuals with mental illness who were leaving prisons or jails and developed a classification of service strategies based on practices that were emerging in the filed in response to this need.
