Success in correctional health care administration is all about relationships. In today’s work environment, collaboration and teamwork are needed to replace the old command and control, paramilitary-style leadership. Emotional intelligence skills are essential to the successful health care administrator, more than technical skills alone. The emotional intelligent health care administrator is adept in trustworthiness, politics, and collaboration. Daniel Goleman’s authored work on working with emotional intelligence suggests people are being judged by new standards for excellence in leadership. This article discusses this new leadership standard in the field of correctional health care administration known as emotional intelligence.
