This study evaluated the convergent and predictive validity of the Sex Offender Risk Appraisal Guide (SORAG) and the Static-99 among male sex offenders in Belgium.
Abstract
The Sex Offender Risk Appraisal Guide (SORAG) and the Static-99 were moderately correlated with each other and both showed strong predictive validity for general and violent recidivism. In addition both instruments showed moderate predictive validity for sexual recidivism. However, it is recommended that evaluators consider multiple measures, understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each instrument used and the characteristics of the population to which it is applied. The SORAG was designed to predict violent and sexual recidivism among sexual offenders. The Static-99, containing 10 items assessing demographics (age at release and relationship status), criminal history, and victim characteristics, was designed to evaluate risk of sexual and violent recidivism in adult sex offenders. The intent of this study was to evaluate the convergent and predictive validity of the 2 actuarial instruments, the SORAG and the Static-99, for assessing recidivism risk in 147 male sex offenders in a high-security Belgium forensic hospital.
