This annual report summarizes information on criminal court cases finalized by the New South Wales (NSW) local, children’s, district, Supreme, and licensing courts in 2005.
Abstract
In 2005, there were small increases reported in the number of persons/organizations with matters finalized in the local courts (up to 139,407) and children’s court (up to 8,428), while the number of persons/organizations with matters finalized in the licensing court decreasing (down to 374). The number of persons finalized in trial and sentence cases in the higher courts (3,556) fell slightly. Two changes have been made to the court data since the 2004 report. The method for calculating principal penalty for persons found guilty in the local and higher courts has been improved. Due to an improvement in the collection of children’s court data by the Department of Juvenile Justice, finalizations in the children’s court have increased. As a result, children’s court data cannot be compared to data appearing previously. In addition, relevant tables include all persons who appeared in 2005 who had identified themselves as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person at any court appearance since 1994. As a result, the number of indigenous persons reported to have appeared in the local court has increased considerably since 2003 (10,995). In 2004, the number rose to 17,655 indigenous persons with finalized matters in the local court. In 2005, the figure stood at 18,059. Tables and appendixes 1-4
