This budget summary for the National Drug Control Strategy for fiscal year (FY) 2008 identifies resources that support the key elements of the strategy: preventing drug use, intervening to treat drug users, and disrupting the drug market.
Abstract
The drug budget for FY 2008 totals $12.961 billion, a decrease of $0.167 billion (1.3-percent decrease) from the previous year. The Bush administration is also separately requesting $266.1 million in additional funding for emergency designations associated with drug-related operations, primarily in Afghanistan. Eleven drug-control agencies are part of the drug budget. A total of $1.6 billion supports a variety of education and outreach programs aimed at preventing the start of drug use. These programs are described, along with the amount of money designated for each program in the drug budget. The drug budget designates more than $3 billion to intervention and treatment efforts, which is an increase of nearly $100 million over the previous year. The Department of Health and Human Services supports the majority of the Federal efforts to provide such intervention and treatment. This report describes these intervention/treatment programs and the amount of money designated for each one. Over $8 billion will support programs designed to disrupt the illicit drug market. In addition to these resources, $266.1 million is designated for emergency operations in drug supply interdiction. The funded interdiction operations are described, along with the funds assigned for each operation. This report also reviews the performance of all programs for the past year. This is done by displaying performance targets in relation to actual accomplishments for key performance measures. Budget tables
