In 2005, the Quality Assurance and Training Unit of the Laboratory were reorganized under the authority of the Deputy Assistant Director of the Forensic Analysis Branch. The Latent Print Units were reorganized, creating a program manager to oversee issues relating to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling setting forth criteria for admitting expert testimony in court. Highlights of the major cases and events Laboratory personnel investigated in 2005 included: the November 2005 Amman Hotel bombings, the death of the Republic of Georgia's prime minister and deputy governor, disaster squad deployment in the wake of the tsunami in Thailand, and the Evidence Response Team in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The collaboration commanded under the Laboratory units of Chemical-Biological Sciences Unit, Combined DNA Index System Unit, Terrorist Explosive Device Analytical Center, and Scientific Working Groups is presented and discussed. To enhance it capabilities, the Laboratory developed and delivered new technologies within its Counterterrorism and Forensic Science Research Unit, such as automation of nuclear DNA analysis, three-dimensional imaging of toolmarks, and noninvasive latent fingerprint development, chemical identification of trace evidence, research partnership program, visiting scientist program, and robotics. Efforts undertaken by units within the administration that provide vital services to help the Laboratory achieve its mission each year include: the Administrative and Security Unit, the Evidence Control Unit, Facility Services Unit, and the Planning and Budget Unit. Efforts are undertaken by the Laboratory to advance staff members' educational degrees and pursue professional development activities. Under the Quality Assurance and Training Unit the strengthening and expanding of the Laboratory's quality system is ongoing, as well as efforts to maintain its accreditation.
