This chapter discusses the question of community safety and antisocial behavior. Within the contemporary policy agenda on community safety, antisocial behavior, and youth justice, there is support for both evidence-based policy and adaptive, pragmatic strategies of local prevention partnerships. What is being witnessed is a concerted political drive to define deviance. However, powers and responsibilities provided by legislation to tackle antisocial behavior have been unevenly applied across England and Wales. It is argued that, in conception and application, deviance, a defined by antisocial behavior, promotes negative understandings of children and young people. The chapter begins with a brief overview of local community safety, the youth problem, and perceptions of antisocial behavior at both the national and local levels. The chapter then analyzes the dynamics around local strategies designed to address the problem of antisocial youth. The chapter concludes by noting the normative and political challenges that are presented by the youth problem in the context of community safety. References
