In Oregon, as a result of a partnership between the Police Activity League and Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, the new Village PAL Youth Activity and Family Resource Center opened. The center provides homework tutors, educational trips, substance abuse education, computer training, English as a second language programs, games, parenting classes, and opportunities to learn more about law enforcement in the community. In Illinois, the Boys II Men was set up in 2002 and offers young African-American and Latino men alternatives to gang violence. It is sponsored by the East Aurora Weed and Seed. The program emphasizes discipline, education, culture, brotherhood, and service. Under the umbrella of the Reentry National Media Outreach Campaign, the documentary, Omar and Peter was created. It tells the story of two longtime friends taking part in a cutting-edge reentry program. The goal of the documentary is to argue for reentry support structures. In California, the Food for Elders Program was developed by Yurok Social Services. The Yurok Tribe is the largest Native American tribe in California. In the program, Yurok youth distribute food to the elders who are living in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. The program is a successful prevention program with the potential for future success as an intervention program with youth in juvenile hall. This issue of Creating Safer Communities focuses on successful programs and documentaries that provide for safer communities while protecting the public.
