This article presents the results of a one-step process using Wetwop to develop latent prints on latex and nitrile gloves.
Abstract
The use of the Wetwop solution resulted in the development of friction ridge detail on all areas of the palmar surface of the gloves. The latent impressions were easily developed in seconds without the need of specialized lighting techniques. The latent impressions were easy to photograph. The developed latents were durable and it was possible to lift the developed latent impressions. The Wetwop solution appears to be well suited for casework because identifiable latents were developed on gloves that were processed within minutes of being worn and on gloves that were processed 1 year after being worn, without any noticeable difference in quality of the impressions. The overall success rate of developing identifiable latent impressions from 100 gloves was 77 percent. Some items of evidence have a limited expectation for the recovery of latent prints. One such item is latex gloves. With some initial testing showing positive results, this study examined the effectiveness of using Wetwop to reveal prints on the inside of latex and nitrile gloves.
