Abstract
Peacekeeping in a multicultural society in the 21st century requires new strategies, skills, tools, and cultural knowledge on the part of those engaged in all aspects of the criminal justice system and homeland security. Compared to a decade ago, contemporary law enforcement has improved resources to meet these challenges resulting from the diversity within communities and the multicultural law enforcement aspects of peacekeeping. The book addresses the key multicultural needs of law enforcement. The practical contents of the book contain critical information and insight that will improve police performance and professionalism. This third edition is designed to assist all levels of criminal justice professionals in understanding the pervasive influences of culture, race, and ethnicity in the workplace and in multicultural communities. It continues to focus on the cross-cultural contact that police officers and civilian employees have with coworkers, victims, suspects, and citizens from diverse backgrounds. However, the third edition includes new chapters on racial profiling, multicultural law enforcement and terrorism, and homeland security and cross-cultural consideration in law enforcement. In addition, there extensive new or updated information on Arab-Americans and post September 11 considerations, gays and lesbians in law enforcement, community policing, and African-Americans, Latino/Hispanic Americans, Asian/Pacific Americans, and Native American groups. Throughout the book, the need for awareness, understanding of cultural differences, and respect toward those of different backgrounds is stressed. This edition has been updated and expanded to provide practical information and guidelines for law enforcement managers, supervisors, officers, and instructors. With cross-cultural knowledge, sensitivity, and tolerance, those charged with peacekeeping will improve their image while demonstrating greater professionalism within the changing multicultural workforce and community.
