This article explains how geospatial technology facilitates the visualization of a variety of data in a map display, which can be useful in decisionmaking related to planning and executing security measures for the Nation's critical infrastructure.
Abstract
The Federal Government is making extensive and innovative use of geospatial technologies in order to deliver more timely and complete information for decisionmaking. The use of spatial information is expanding from specific projects to spatially integrated multiagency information systems. The integration of disparate systems presents a key challenge in implementing effective solutions for emergency management and security. A further challenge in implementing such systems is the creation and maintenance of the large amount of geospatial data that underlie the system. Various aspects of this come under the National Spatial Data infrastructure (NSDI) initiative. One example of the development and application of a Geospatial information system is SensorNet, which enables the charting of a real-time plume model that researchers can use to chart the geographical extent of a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, or explosive event based on sensor alerts. SensorNet allows for the inclusion of information from external data sources, so that such modeling data can be archived and made available to first responders. In one application of SensorNet, the Intergraph Corporation is working with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Object Video, and Stanley Security Solutions to provide advance perimeter security at Fort Bragg's Simmons Army Air Field. The security system features advanced technologies, including the largest deployment to date of SensorNet.
