The format of the report is to describe the programs and achievements of various member organizations of the Crime Prevention Coalition of America (CPCA) in partnership with the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC). One of the programs described is the multifaceted approach of the Citizen Corps program, which includes the Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) and Neighborhood Watch. The mission of Citizen Corps is to recruit the capabilities of every individual in making communities safer and better prepared to meet a variety of threats. Coordinated nationally by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Citizen Corps supports a broad range of public education, outreach, training, and volunteer opportunities that pertain to community safety. Various versions of the Neighborhood Watch program are described for various communities throughout the United States. National crime prevention programs described include the McGruff Club, which engages children in crime prevention; Project Anti-violence Education, a national Girl Scout violence intervention initiative; Safe Place, which involves the entire community in providing safe havens and resources for youth in crisis; and the Neighborhood Watch Toolkit, which enhances Neighborhood Watch activities by providing formal training for police, block captains, and community volunteers. Other national crime prevention programs focus on specific crimes, such as shoplifting and insurance fraud. Various statewide crime prevention programs are also described. For each program presented, information is provided on a contact person.
